Frankfurt in Gridlock: Rail Network Disruptions Cause Chaos in the Region
Germany’s Rail Network Disrupted by GSM-R Radio System Failure
A significant disruption hit Germany’s rail network on Saturday, primarily affecting the central region. Deutsche Bahn reported the all-clear in the afternoon.
Multiple rail links experienced severe disruptions on Saturday due to a disturbance in the railway’s GSM-R radio system, confirmed by a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson. The issue was resolved in the late afternoon, and rail traffic in central Germany resumed. However, some disruptions may persist until the end of operations.
Trains are not permitted to operate when the GSM-R radio system fails, according to reports. The outage mainly impacted the greater Frankfurt am Main area, with all connections passing through central Germany also affected.
An information board at Frankfurt am Main’s main station displayed the message “Nationwide disruption: train services stopped on all lines.” However, when questioned at midday, a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson denied that all train traffic in Germany had been suspended.
DB Regio reported that all regional and S-Bahn traffic in the Rhine-Main area was affected by the disruption.
