Grammy-nominated R&B singer Freddie Jackson died at age 70, according to a statement posted to his verified Instagram account on Tuesday, Oct. 6, by his family. While family members shared that the quiet storm crooner went home to rest on Monday night, passing away on Oct. 5 just days after celebrating his 70th birthday, a specific cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

Rise to Stardom and Chart-Topping Hits

Born in Harlem in 1956, Jackson began his musical journey singing in the church and New York clubs before moving to California to front the funk band Mystic Merlin. After returning to New York, singing background for Melba Moore, and working with childhood friend, producer and songwriter Paul Laurence, his demo tapes secured him a record deal with Capitol Records.

His 1985 debut album, Rock Me Tonight, launched him to international stardom. The title track, Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake), spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart, while the follow-up single, You Are My Lady, became his signature song and a top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Over his career, his sophisticated style and polished production earned him 10 No. 1 R&B singles, with additional hits including Tasty Love, Have You Ever Loved Somebody, Jam Tonight, and the Melba Moore duet A Little Bit More.
