Lincoln and Lancaster County residents will have two opportunities this April to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste at free mobile collection events organized by local environmental and public health agencies.
The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department, in coordination with the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, announced the events will take place on two Saturdays in April at designated sites across the county. The first event is scheduled for April 12 from 8 a.m. To noon at the Hickman Fire Station, located at 115 Main Street in Hickman. The second event will occur on April 26 during the same hours at Star City Shores, situated at 7000 A Street in Lincoln.
Residents are encouraged to bring common household hazardous materials such as oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, pesticides, herbicides, automotive fluids, batteries, and cleaning solvents. Officials emphasized that items like explosives, ammunition, radioactive materials, and medical waste will not be accepted at these events.
The collection program, part of the ongoing “HazToGo” initiative, aims to prevent improper disposal of hazardous substances that could contaminate soil, water sources, or pose risks to sanitation workers and the public. Materials collected will be transported to a licensed hazardous waste facility for proper treatment or recycling.
Business-generated waste will not be accepted at these residential events. Officials advised companies seeking disposal options for commercial hazardous waste to contact the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy for guidance on licensed handlers and permitted facilities.
Additional details, including a full list of accepted and prohibited items, are available through the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department’s website or by contacting their environmental health division directly. Residents are reminded to keep materials in their original containers when possible and to avoid mixing chemicals during transport.
