AFP reported on the 28th (local time) that the French government has asked its allies to send thousands of troops to ensure security for the Paris Olympics, which will open in July.

“The troops sent from abroad will strengthen our security in some important areas, such as the ability to handle military (or police) dogs,” a French defense ministry official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.

The official did not say how many foreign troops are on French soil, but Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kośniakkamys said the country was “participating in an international coalition organized by France” for the Olympics.

Germany also announced its intention to send an unspecified number of police officers to France for the Olympics, and France will also send police officers to Germany during Euro 2024 in June and July.

A French Interior Ministry official said separately that the government had asked to send 2,185 police officers to 46 allies in January.

A French Interior Ministry official, who asked not to be identified, insisted it was not a special measure, saying, “It’s something the host countries do as a courtesy before major events.”

The official said, “During the Rugby World Cup held in France last year, our European allies sent 160 police officers to help maintain security.”

However, the French government has no choice but to pay close attention to security issues at the Paris Olympics. The recent terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall concert hall in Moscow, allegedly by the Islamic State (IS), also had an impact.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said, “The threat of terrorism is real and powerful,” and insisted that a plot by suspected Islamic extremists had already been thwarted.

Up to 45,000 French police and gendarmerie are expected to be deployed each day to the Olympics, which take place from July 26 to August 11, and around 18,000 military personnel are also expected to be mobilized, AFP reported.

In addition, 18,000 to 22,000 private security personnel will be deployed.
