British tennis Roars at French Open, Best Showing in 52 Years
PARIS — Jack Draper’s first-round victory at the French Open has capped a historic moment for British tennis, marking their most triumphant showing at the tournament in 52 years.

Draper’s triumph over Mattia Bellucci, with a score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, made him the sixth British player to secure a win in their opening match. This achievement is the highest number of British first-round victories since 1973. Emma Raducanu, Jacob Fearnley, Katie Boulter, Cameron Norrie, and Sonay Kartal also advanced.
Draper faced an initial setback against Bellucci on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, struggling with his serve and losing the first set 6-3. Bellucci, ranked No. 68, clinched the set with an underarm serve.
Though, draper turned the tide, dominating the subsequent sets with increasing confidence. He secured the next two sets 6-1, 6-4, and finished the match with a 6-2 victory in the fourth. Draper will now face either Gael Monfils or Hugo Dellien in the second round.
“I’m really proud with the way I turned the game on its head, started to be more aggressive. It was a tough battle,” Draper said. He emphasized the importance of fitness, hard work, and a strong support system for his success.
Earlier on Tuesday, Cameron Norrie secured a notable five-set victory against Daniil Medvedev on Court Simone-Mathieu. Norrie, competing in his eighth consecutive French Open, won 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 7-5 in 3 hours and 53 minutes. This win marks his most significant since defeating casper Ruud at the Australian Open.

Norrie, who had previously lost all four matches against Medvedev, started strong, taking a two-set lead. Medvedev grew increasingly frustrated, often directing his anger towards his coaching box. Despite Medvedev’s comeback to win the third and fourth sets, Norrie rallied in the fifth, breaking Medvedev twice to secure the victory.
“It was an astonishing atmosphere. Thank you to everyone for supporting me there. I really felt like I had the momentum at the end,” Norrie said. He acknowledged Medvedev’s toughness and expressed his excitement over the win.
Norrie will now compete against Federico Agustin Gomez of Argentina in the second round.
Sonay Kartal, another british player advancing to the second round, plans to celebrate with a new tattoo. However, a scheduling conflict with doubles matches has forced her to postpone the appointment.
Kartal, making her main draw debut at Roland Garros, easily won her first-round match against Erika Andreeva 6-0, 6-2. She is also participating in doubles with Jodie Burrage.Kartal intends to add to her existing collection of 13 tattoos, possibly with a French Open-themed design.
