French Surgeon: 20-Year Sentence for Abuse of Hundreds
French Surgeon Sentenced in Mass Sexual Abuse Case
Updated May 28, 2025
Joel Le Scouarnec, a retired surgeon, was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a French court for the rape and sexual abuse of nearly 300 victims. Many of the victims were children under anesthesia. The crimes occurred over a 25-year period, marking one of the most shocking mass sexual abuse cases in France.
the Brittany court’s conviction is considered the worst case of child abuse to go to trial in modern France. This mass sexual abuse case follows the conviction of 51 men involved in the decade-long rape of Gisele Pelicot,a case that sparked #MeToo movement discussions.
Le Scouarnec, 74, admitted to the sexual abuse and rape of 299 patients, including 256 under the age of 15, during his time at hospitals in western France. The attacks spanned from 1989 to 2014,often targeting patients under anesthesia or recovering from operations. He faced 111 rape charges and 189 sexual assault charges.

Throughout the trial, Le Scouarnec acknowledged his ”despicable acts,” telling the court, “I owe it to all these people and their loved ones to admit my actions and their consequences.”
“I owe it to all these people and their loved ones to admit my actions and their consequences, wich they’ve endured and will keep having to endure all their lives,” Le Scouarnec said.
Victims and their advocates expressed skepticism about Le Scouarnec’s remorse. Thomas Delaby, a lawyer representing victims, called him the “worst mass paedophile who ever lived” and an “atomic bomb of paedophilia,” adding that the victims “will never forgive you, never.”
Le Scouarnec was previously convicted in 2020 for the rape and sexual assault of four children, including two nieces, and was already serving a 15-year sentence. The current 20-year sentence is the maximum possible under French law, where sentences are not served consecutively.
The mass sexual abuse case has ignited concerns about France’s public health system and how Le Scouarnec evaded accountability for so long. Advocates question why he continued working in public hospitals after a 2005 conviction for downloading child sexual abuse images, which resulted in only a suspended sentence.
The full extent of Le Scouarnec’s crimes came to light after his 2017 rearrest for allegedly raping his 6-year-old neighbor. Police discovered electronic diaries detailing decades of abuse, in which Le Scouarnec described himself as a “major pervert” and a “paedophile,” stating, “And I am very happy about it.”
What’s next
The verdict arrives amid a broader reckoning on sexual abuse in France and discussions about societal norms that may enable such crimes. The recent conviction of 51 men in the Gisele pelicot rape case has further fueled this movement, with Pelicot’s testimony resonating deeply with the public.
