Inside the Frick Collection
The Frick Collection, founded by industrialist Henry Clay frick, has undergone important expansion and renovation. The project encompasses 196,000 square meters, with 60,000 square meters reused and 27,000 square meters of new construction.
The architectural firms Selldorf Architects and Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners expanded the gallery space by 30%. The renovation includes the new Stephen A. Schwarzman Auditorium with 220 seats, renovated reading rooms, and a new suite of galleries on the second floor of the original Frick family house, which will be open to the public for the first time.
According to Annabelle Selldorf, director of Selldorf Architects,We worked carefully to develop an architectural vocabulary for the project that was in continuity with the existing ancient fabric, while using distinct but appropriate contemporary details in facades and interiors. I believe that this careful fusion of old and new will make people feel even more welcome when they return – or will discover for the first time – the frick, his collection and his splendid setting.
