Shim Hyeong-rae, former CEO/Director of Yeonggu Art Movie (Photo = Daily Sports) Hyeong-rae Shim, a comedian who was a representative star of Korean comedy in the 1980s and was greatly loved by the public for his comical character called ‘Yeonggu’, and former CEO of Younggu Art Movie. However, having reached the peak of comedy, he did not remain in the realm of a comedian and took on a new challenge: global film production in the mid-1990s. The first step toward this goal was Yeonggu Art Movie, established in 1993.
Since then, Yeonggu Art Movies has developed its capabilities by producing science fiction films such as ‘Yonggari’, and eventually achieved the milestone of mobilizing ‘8 million’ viewers with D-War. However, despite being a huge hit, it faced management difficulties due to rapid financial difficulties and excessive production costs.
In particular, Shim Hyung-rae dreamed of entering Hollywood through D-War, but even ‘The Last Godfather’, which he worked hard to produce, failed to be a box office success due to controversy, and eventually Younggu Art Movie entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2011. Shim Hyeong-rae, the former CEO, also went through difficult times and incurred a large amount of debt due to the box office failure of a movie in 2013. In 2022, he appeared on a broadcast and said, “Even though I sold everything I had at the time, I still had 17.9 billion won in debt. “That’s why I filed for bankruptcy,” he said, adding, “I went to Guanwasa because I was stressed, and I also got diabetes.”
There is news that former CEO Shim Hyung-rae, who was represented by such ‘rise and fall’, will once again appear on the stage of ‘Gag Concert’ as a comedian rather than a business executive. This is his first appearance on a comedy program as a comedian in 14 years since he made a special appearance on the ‘Master’ corner in 2010.
Recently, the recording of KBS 2TV’s comedy concert was completed, and it was reported that he worked with juniors such as Kim Young-hee and Jeong Beom-gyun in the ‘King of Communication Grandma’ corner.
This broadcast is scheduled to air at 11 PM on the 3rd of next month.
Shim Hyung-rae debuted in the entertainment industry by winning a bronze medal at the KBS Comedy Contest in 1982. He appeared in Humor Theater, Humor No. 1, Show Video Jockey, Comedy Highway, Out of Laughs, and Comedy Observatory, gaining great popularity with his unique slapstick gags. He received the KBS Comedy Grand Prize in 1988.
Shim Hyung-rae said, “After experiencing a big failure, I had a lot of thoughts of wanting to leave this world, but the driving force that made me keep trying was thanks to the fans who supported and encouraged me.” He also said, “I am lacking in many things, but I will work harder.”
