From Inspiration to Remake: How Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Inspired Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

The director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth credits Disney’s animated remake with inspiring the team to remake the 1997 JRPG classic.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi spoke to Vandal, a Spanish media outlet. Hamaguchi recalled 2017, when he and his team saw the film Beauty and the Beast. The live-action version stars Emma Watson and Dan Stevens.

After finishing watching the film Hamaguchi was inspired by many things. At the time, the team was in the early stages of development on Final Fantasy VII Remake.

“We didn’t know what we wanted to change or what aspects of the game we needed to keep,” explains Hamaguchi. “I feel like I’m trying to find the best way to make the game work. Until I saw the movie Beauty and the Beast, I was very impressed. I felt like I was doing something similar to this.

Previously, Square Enix wanted to bring back the classic game and revamp it to be on par with the animated film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, thanks in part to Disney bringing back old animations and turning them into films.

“Things are the same. That is, they restored the old animations and improved the content to make it more realistic,” Hamaguchi continued. “This inspiration was very helpful.”

Of course, Final Fantasy VII Remake isn’t just an update over the original. but also changed the content of the game to give a new direction. Until the content of the game becomes another universe of the original game and can continue to become a trilogy in its own way.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will officially release on February 29, 2024, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
