Taisha High School’s Ace Pitcher Yuta Banba: A National Star Born at Koshien
Taisha High School surprised the Koshien this summer, and among them, ace pitcher Yuta Banba suddenly became a national star. A local reporter asked him in early September about his newfound fame and his plans for the future.
From Unknown to National Star
He had a mischievous smile and tone of voice when asked about his recognition in the town. “There is a little bit, but compared to Banba-san, it’s nothing,” said Ishihara Yuto, the captain and starting catcher for Taisha.
Banba’s wife also commented on the change, saying, “We’ve been getting a lot of calls from the local community. The most common question is, ‘Are you Banba?’ Every time I hear that, I realize just how much we’ve made it to the top eight at Koshien.”
A Winning Streak at Koshien
The team’s achievements at Koshien were impressive, with a first appearance in 32 years, first win in 63 years, first two wins in 107 years, and first appearance in the quarterfinals in 93 years. Banba was at the center of this winning streak.
Banba’s Performance at Koshien
The left-handed pitcher wearing the number 1 uniform started and pitched complete games in three consecutive games, starting with the first game against Hotoku Gakuen. In the third round against Waseda Jitsugyo, he pitched through 11 extra innings and finally hit a walk-off hit to center field with the bases loaded and no outs, demonstrating his prowess in both offense and defense.
As he ran to first base, he watched the ball break through the gap between second and shortstop, and with tears in his eyes, he spread his arms out in response to the cheers. He said, “I couldn’t think of anything, so I just naturally took that pose,” but surrounded by deafening cheers and illuminated by the night game lights, he looked almost divine.
What’s Next for Banba?
The team is set to take part in the “National Sports Festival” to be held in Saga in October. As for Banba’s plans, he is still considering his options, including the possibility of going pro.
