Frustration and Lies: A Woman’s Struggle to Cancel Her Planet Fitness Membership

Frustration and Lies: A Woman’s Struggle to Cancel Her Planet Fitness Membership

November 23, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

Struggles of Canceling a Gym Membership

Canceling a gym membership can be frustrating. Megan Million recently shared her experience trying to cancel her Planet Fitness membership. According to the gym’s policy, members must either visit their gym in person or send a written request via mail.

Megan chose to go in person. To convince the employee to process her cancellation, she fabricated a story about her family. She claimed her family suffered food poisoning, leading to her father’s leg amputation, and that they had to move overseas. The employee seemed shocked and empathetic, allowing her to cancel her membership after hearing the tale.

This episode highlights a significant issue. Many people feel pressured to justify their reasons for canceling. It should be enough that someone wants to stop paying for a service they no longer use.

Comments online show others share similar frustrations. One user humorously mentioned pretending to go to prison to bypass the cancellation queries. While Planet Fitness faces criticism for its strict cancellation policies, it is not alone. Other gyms, like Equinox, require cancellations in person or by mail but offer email options as well.

The fitness industry often relies on guilt or shame, leading to negative experiences. For instance, Planet Fitness uses a “lunk alarm” that goes off when someone makes noise while exercising. This alarm creates a tense environment, undermining the idea of a “Judgment Free Zone.”

These practices contribute to people avoiding gyms altogether. Many prefer local gyms, which may offer a more welcoming atmosphere. Life coach Erin McGoff pointed out that large gyms can exploit customers, and she’s pleased that the FTC is proposing new rules for easier cancellations.

As of October 2024, companies must allow easy cancellation of memberships. This change means no more fabricating stories to escape unwanted subscriptions. Now, consumers can end memberships just as easily as they started them.

Gym chains recognize the hurdles of in-person cancellations. Many people experience shame and anxiety in these situations. This has led to the strict cancellation demands many gyms implement.

In summary, gym memberships often involve unnecessary complications when trying to cancel. The recent changes in regulations are a step toward making this process more straightforward.
