St. Cloud Tech High School junior and varsity soccer player Aaron Dorboryan is being treated in the intensive care unit at Children’s Minnesota hospital following a stroke he suffered on the morning of Sept. 9. According to local reporting by KNSI and the St. Cloud Times, the medical emergency led to serious complications and an extended recovery period, prompting an outpouring of community support and an ongoing online fundraiser.
Rallied Teammates Maintain Undefeated Streak
The sudden medical event blindsided the Tech boys soccer program. Tech coach Mohamad Aden told the St. Cloud Times that the team had played Sartell on Sept. 8 before Dorboryan fell ill the following morning.
I told the boys that we play for Aaron every game,
Aden said, as reported by the St. Cloud Times. Every chance we got on the field, it’s an opportunity. We don’t take it for granted.
In the five games Dorboryan has missed since his hospitalization, the Tigers have gone unbeaten with a 4-0-1 record, outscoring opponents 22-8. Players visited Dorboryan at the hospital last week, where he remained unconscious, and have continued to communicate with his family via text. Aden noted that before games, players remind each other to leave everything on the pitch for their teammate.
Fundraiser and Community Response
To help offset the mounting medical bills alongside travel, lodging, and lost income for his family while they stay by his side, an online GoFundMe campaign was organized by Anthony Kaba. As reported by the St. Cloud Times, the fundraiser has collected nearly $5,000 toward a $45,000 goal. Organizers and coaches describe Dorboryan as a respectful, hardworking, and versatile athlete who serves as a calm, steady leader. Having progressed through the ninth-grade team as a freshman and the junior varsity squad as a sophomore, Dorboryan earned his varsity debut this fall. Outside of high school play, he has also competed with the Central Minnesota Youth Soccer Association. Supporters are asked to share the fundraiser and keep the Dorboryan family in their thoughts during his recovery.
