Retail Sector Faces Major disruptions, Bain Report Says
Updated June 14, 2025
The global retail sector is poised for important change in the next decade, according to a new report. Bain & Company‘s study, “The Future of Retail: Six Disruptions That could Shape the Next Decade,” advises businesses to look beyond immediate concerns like inflation and rather focus on long-term shifts driven by technology and evolving consumer behavior.
The report highlights six key disruptions. automation will increasingly control pricing and promotions. Artificial intelligence shopping agents will challenge brand loyalty. Personalized, data-driven value will outweigh price. Grocers will become major players in consumer goods. Physical stores will need to evolve, and global partnerships will be essential for funding tech upgrades.
These changes will require retailers to diversify thier revenue streams. They will need to tap into retail media, third-party marketplaces, financial services, and logistics.
“Retail is on the brink of change. These disruptions are not speculative, they’re already taking hold,” said Marc-André Kamel, partner and global head of Bain & Company’s Retail practice.
According to Bain, “beyond trade” activities accounted for 15% of sales and 25% of profits in 2024, a jump from 10% in 2021. This diversification is key to navigating the evolving retail landscape.
“Those who act early and reinvest strategically will help lead a new era of retail excellence,” Kamel said.
What’s next
Retailers should consider scenario planning to prepare for these changes and strategically reinvest to lead in the new era of retail.
