Gambling in the Park: 60-Year-Old Man’s Risky Operation Exposed, Faces Prosecution
Man in 60s Arrested for Running Elderly-Targeted Gambling Ring in Park
A man in his 60s has been accused of running a gambling ring targeting the elderly in a park and lending money to gamblers at high interest rates.
Daegu Gangbuk Police Station announced that a man in his 60s, Mr. A, was sent to the prosecution without detention on charges of opening a gambling establishment.
According to the police investigation, Mr. A allegedly hosted a card game called ‘Dorijitgotdaeng’, played with Hwatu, in the vicinity of Guam Park in Buk-gu from January to July of this year. He also lent money to elderly people in their 60s or older who visited the park, charging them 10% interest on the principal.
The police estimated that the total amount of gambling during this period was between 10 to 20 million won. Mr. A’s case was pursued after receiving repeated reports of elderly people gambling in a park pavilion.
The police gathered evidence through on-site inspections and closed-circuit television (CCTV) analysis, which led to Mr. A’s case being sent to the prosecution. Eight elderly people in their 60s and 70s who participated in the gambling activities were also sent to the prosecution.
