Table of Contents
The decathlon competition is underway, and American champion Kyle Garland has surged into the lead after a strong showing in the first three events on September 20, 2025. Garland demonstrated remarkable all-around ability, clocking a time of 10.51 seconds in the 100 meters, leaping 7.92 meters in the long jump, and achieving a throw of 17.02 meters in the shot put. These performances have given him a commanding 162-point advantage over his rivals.
Contenders Emerge
Olympic silver medalist Leo Neugebauer currently holds second place, closely followed by 2024 world indoor champion Simon Ehammer in third. Puerto Rico’s Ayden Owens-Delerme is also in contention, positioned just behind Ehammer. World indoor champion Sander Skotheim is making his presence felt, currently in fifth place, and is only 39 points off his personal best score of 8909 points, achieved earlier this year.
heartbreak for Reigning Champion
A significant setback occurred before the competition truly began with the late withdrawal of Damian Warner. The Olympic gold medalist from the 2021 Tokyo Games, who won gold in this very stadium in 2021, sustained an Achilles injury during warm-up and was forced to withdraw. This is a devastating blow for Warner and a loss for the event, as he was considered a top contender.
Looking ahead
The competition is far from over, with seven events still to come. The remaining events will truly test the athletes’ endurance, versatility, and mental fortitude. Stay tuned for further updates as the decathlon unfolds.
