Jakarta – State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Minister Erick Thohir has shed light on Garuda Indonesia’s enterprising plan to acquire 50 Boeing aircraft units from the United States. This critically important procurement is reportedly a key component of an agreement between the Indonesian and US governments aimed at reducing trade tariffs from 32% to 19%.
When pressed for details on the purchase, Minister Thohir directed inquiries to Garuda Indonesia’s Managing director, wamildan Tsani Panjaitan, stating, “If Garuda, ask the Director of Garuda, there are more operations.” He made these remarks following a joint meeting and discussion at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
Funding the Fleet: A Multi-Pronged Approach
Garuda Indonesia has outlined a clear strategy for financing this considerable acquisition, drawing from both internal resources and external partnerships.
Internal Financial Sanitation
In a disclosure to the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), garuda revealed that the primary source of funds will stem from the company’s internal resources. This aligns with the ongoing financial sanitation program that the airline has been implementing following it’s restructuring.
“as for the source of funding for the purchase of the aircraft, it is indeed in line with the company’s financial statement plans as stated in the draft restructuring in the context of the Company’s health that has been approved by the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), which had previously received approval from the President of the Republic of Indonesia on June 23, 2025, and the Extraordinary General Meeting of the Company on June 30, 2025,” the document submitted to the IDX stated, as quoted on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
Exploring Investor Partnerships
Beyond its internal financial strength, Garuda is actively exploring collaborations with potential investors. The airline is in discussions with several parties who could provide the necessary funding for the new fleet. This proactive approach underscores Garuda’s commitment to securing the resources needed for its expansion.
Strategic Partnership with Boeing
Garuda Indonesia is engaged in intensive dialog with Boeing to finalize the specifics of the purchase scheme. This includes a thorough evaluation of aircraft types that best align with Garuda’s operational needs and market share projections. The airline is also focused on establishing realistic aircraft delivery schedules.
A crucial aspect of these discussions involves ensuring Boeing’s capability to supply aircraft models that are in sync with Garuda’s long-term business objectives. This strategic alignment is vital for the airline’s future growth and competitiveness in the global aviation market.
