Key Victory in Playoff push
ANAHEIM – The Cincinnati Reds continued their pursuit of a National League Wild Card spot with a decisive 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night at Angel Stadium. The win marked the Reds’ ninth consecutive victory against the Angels, a streak dating back to August 2019 and representing their longest winning streak against an American league team.
Lux Finds His Groove
gavin Lux continues to heat up at the plate, launching a two-run home run in the first inning and contributing to a fifth multi-hit game in his last nine contests. The warm California climate, reminiscent of his days with the Los angeles Dodgers, seems to be agreeing with him. Last season, Lux hit eight of his ten home runs in July and August, and his seven career August home runs are now his most in any single month. “Maybe when the weather gets warmer, the ball flies better. I don’t know,” lux said, adding, “I think usually as the season goes, the more at-bats you get, the more you kind of put the puzzle pieces together and figure it out a little more.”
Despite a slight dip in power numbers compared to his career-best 10 home runs last season, Lux has remained a consistent offensive force for the Reds.
Pitching and Defense Shine
Right-hander Brady Singer delivered a strong performance, allowing just one run on six hits over six innings. He has now limited opponents to one run or fewer in three of his last four starts, including a pair of scoreless outings against the Philadelphia Phillies and atlanta Braves earlier this month. Singer was aided by strong defensive plays, especially from Ke’Bryan Hayes at third base. The bullpen also stepped up, with Scott Barlow earning his first save of the season after recording all four outs via strikeout.
Offensive Support Beyond Lux
While Lux sparked the offense, the Reds received contributions throughout the lineup. Austin Hays added two hits and an RBI, while Elly De La Cruz reached base with a leadoff triple in the fifth and scored. Hayes also tripled in the eighth, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Matt mclain. Manager Terry Francona highlighted De La Cruz’s continued productivity, even while navigating a recent quad injury.”He’s done a really good job; plays every day,” Francona said. “And I don’t care how many home runs he hits… He’s been plenty productive for us.”
Looking Ahead: A Challenging Road
With 36 games remaining, the Reds find themselves just one game behind the New York Mets for the third and final National League Wild Card spot. Though, the path to the postseason won’t be easy. The reds face a challenging schedule that includes matchups against the Dodgers, Mets, Padres, Cubs, and the league-leading Milwaukee Brewers. Francona emphasized the importance of focusing on the present. “I don’t think it’s any bit productive to look down the road and see who we’re playing three weeks from now,” he stated. “We might miss what’s right in front of us and I don’t want to do that.”
