Israeli forces allegedly opened fire near⁣ a food aid distribution point⁣ in southern Gaza on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of⁣ at least 31 Palestinians, according to‍ witnesses and local health officials. The incident occurred near an Israel-approved aid distribution center in the al-Mawasi area of western Rafah.

Eyewitnesses told the Wafa news agency that Israeli forces fired ‍directly “from tanks and drones”⁣ on hundreds of people attempting⁤ to reach the aid center. Officials in the Hamas-run Strip reported that more than 170 people were treated for injuries.

The Palestinian red Crescent reported ⁤its medical teams recovered 23 bodies ‍and treated 23 injured individuals at the ⁤site, which was established ⁤by the U.S.-based Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

The Israeli military stated⁣ it⁣ was “currently unaware of injuries caused by (Israeli military) fire within the humanitarian aid distribution site”⁢ and that “the matter is still under review.”

The GHF, backed by ⁣the U.S. and Israel but not endorsed by the ⁢UN, has faced challenges in its aid distribution efforts. Multiple witnesses have⁢ reported incidents of ‍Israeli troops firing on crowds near delivery sites. Prior to Sunday, local health officials said at least six people had been killed and more than 50 wounded.

The foundation claims its private security contractors did not fire on⁤ the crowds and that it delivered aid “without incident” early Sunday.

Amr Abu⁣ Teiba, who was present, told the Associated Press that “there was fire ⁣from all directions, from naval warships, from tanks and ⁤drones”.

Ibrahim Abu Saoud reported troops opened fire at people moving toward the aid distribution center, resulting in dozens of deaths, including women. He recounted seeing numerous people with gunshot‍ wounds, including a young⁤ man who‍ died⁢ at the⁣ scene.

The foundation initiated aid deliveries last Monday after Israel lifted its aid blockade. Palestinians, though, appeared wary of biometric screening procedures at the foundation’s sites, despite⁤ Israeli claims that the process prevents those connected with Hamas from receiving aid.

The UN and other aid agencies ⁢have declined to collaborate with the new system, citing violations of humanitarian principles as Israel controls aid recipients.

Israel and the GHF previously accused Hamas of obstructing civilians from reaching the aid distribution center, an accusation Hamas denied.

The UN has characterized Gaza as the “hungriest ‍place on Earth,” ⁤noting that Israel has only allowed a “trickle” of food into the⁣ area, with 300 aid ⁢trucks unable to unload due to operational bottlenecks.

Even with the resumption of a small⁤ aid flow, Israeli forces have continued attacks on various targets around ⁤Gaza, resulting in the deaths of 3,901 ‍Palestinians sence a two-month ceasefire ended in ⁤mid-March, according to the health ministry in Gaza.

Gaza health authorities report ⁢that more than 54,000 Palestinians have been killed ⁢in Israel’s air‍ and ground war, which began after a Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7, 2023, that killed ⁢about 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken to Gaza.

What’s next

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the international community is calling⁤ for greater transparency and accountability in aid distribution to Gaza. The incident raises concerns about‍ the safety of civilians seeking humanitarian assistance and ⁣the challenges of⁣ delivering aid in⁤ a conflict zone.
