The Health Ministry in Gaza reported Wednesday that at least 55,104 Palestinians have died as the start of the Israel-Gaza war in October 2023. The ongoing conflict and renewed Israeli attacks continue to take a devastating toll.
In the last 24 hours alone, 123 bodies were transported to hospitals, according to a ministry statement. An additional 474 people sustained injuries, bringing the total number of wounded to 127,394 since the beginning of the Israeli offensive. The humanitarian crisis deepens as the conflict intensifies.
The ministry also noted that numerous victims remain trapped under rubble or in areas inaccessible to rescue teams due to the ongoing hostilities. The renewed Israeli attacks, which began March 18, have resulted in 4,821 deaths and 15,535 injuries, effectively ending a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement established in January.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) previously issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the situation in Gaza. Moreover, Israel is facing a genocide case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning its actions in the region. The legal challenges underscore the severity of the situation.
What’s next
The immediate future remains uncertain as violence continues and diplomatic efforts struggle to gain traction. The focus remains on providing humanitarian aid and seeking a path toward de-escalation to alleviate the suffering of civilians in Gaza. The need for a lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is more urgent than ever, as the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen.
