Gaza Deaths Near Aid Site Spark Concerns Over Humanitarian Role

Israeli fire and air strikes have reportedly killed at least 58 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip,according to local health authorities.Many of the ⁢deaths occurred near an aid distribution site operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which ⁢is⁣ backed by the United States. The casualties represent the latest in a series of incidents involving people desperately seeking food.

Medical personnel at al-awda and Al-Aqsa hospitals in‍ central Gaza⁤ reported that at least 15 individuals died saturday while attempting to reach the GHF aid distribution point near the Netzarim Corridor. Additional fatalities resulted from separate attacks throughout‍ the Gaza Strip.the Gaza⁢ Ministry of Health stated that at least 274 people have died and more than ‍2,000 have been injured near ⁢aid distribution sites since the GHF⁢ began operations last month.

The GHF announced it’s sites were closed Saturday. Though, witnesses reported thousands gathered, driven by severe food shortages resulting from Israel’s 15-week ‍blockade and military campaign.

Tareq Abu Azzoum‍ reported that palestinians increasingly view GHF distribution hubs as risky, given the repeated attacks. He ‍added that Gazans feel forced to risk these “execution sites” due to a lack ‍of alternatives ‍for obtaining aid.

israel imposed‍ a full humanitarian blockade on Gaza for 11 weeks starting March 2, restricting food, medical supplies, and other aid. ‍While some aid‍ has been allowed in since late May following international pressure, humanitarian organizations say it remains insufficient.

Neither the Israeli military nor the GHF instantly commented on Saturday’s incidents.

The GHF, led ‍by Johnnie Moore, began distributing food packages in Gaza on ⁣May‍ 27, implementing a⁣ new aid distribution model. The United Nations has criticized this model as neither impartial nor neutral.

Israel and the United States claim the new system will replace the UN-run network, accusing Hamas of diverting UN aid to fund military activities. Israel has also admitted to backing armed groups in Gaza to undermine Hamas,with these groups blamed for looting aid.

UN officials deny hamas diverts critically important aid and argue the new system fails to meet needs,militarizing aid by allowing Israel to control access and forcing Palestinians to travel⁢ long distances.

The Israeli military ordered residents of Khan Younis, Abasan, and Bani Suheila to evacuate to the “humanitarian ⁣zone,” citing operations against “terror organizations.”

According to⁣ the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over ‍80% of ‍Gaza is now within the Israeli-militarized zone, under displacement ⁢orders, or both. The ⁢UN estimates nearly 665,000 people have been displaced‍ since Israel broke the ceasefire in February.

The conflict has killed more than 55,290 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to Gaza health authorities, and caused widespread destruction. Most of the population is displaced and malnutrition is widespread.

Despite‍ mediation efforts, neither Israel nor Hamas has compromised on key demands, including a permanent ceasefire.

International efforts ⁤to secure a⁢ ceasefire and address the humanitarian⁤ crisis are expected to continue, ⁤with pressure mounting on all parties to ensure the safe delivery of aid and protection of civilians in Gaza. The‍ role of international organizations in providing impartial assistance remains a key point of contention.
