Gaza City Under Siege: A Purposeful Campaign of Displacement and Destruction
Israeli forces are intensifying their assault on gaza City, employing a strategy of relentless bombing, shelling, and targeted demolitions that is systematically dismantling neighborhoods and forcing mass displacement. Evidence suggests this is part of a broader, US-backed plan to ethnically cleanse approximately one million Palestinians from large swaths of the Gaza Strip, paving the way for reoccupation.
over the past week, the Zeitoun and Sabra neighborhoods have borne the brunt of the offensive.Hundreds of homes have been destroyed, and displacement shelters themselves have been targeted, compelling residents to flee south. Approximately 11 displacement centers in Zeitoun are currently housing an estimated 4,000-4,500 Palestinians each, in an area already largely reduced to rubble as part of the creation of the Netzarim Corridor and a designated “buffer zone.”
Reports from the ground paint a harrowing picture. Mahmoud Basal, a spokesperson for Gaza Civil Defense, stated that the IDF is deliberately targeting inhabited apartment buildings, resulting in the deaths of entire families.Rescue efforts are hampered by ongoing attacks on those attempting to assist the injured and trapped.
The human cost is staggering. An IDF strike on the Hosary family home on Tuesday reportedly killed at least 28 people, with many more still buried in the debris. “We are terrified because most of the airstrikes on homes came without warning,” shared Zeitoun resident Shady Mohamed. “The bombardment is everywhere around us.”
beyond conventional weaponry, Israeli forces are utilizing snipers and armed drones to target and forcibly displace civilians. Sahar L., a Zeitoun resident who recently fled, described a scene of utter devastation: “I clutched my daughter as we walked over shattered glass and rubble, surrounded by smoke, flames, and explosions everywhere. I ran without knowing where to go. God help us.Enough, world, enough.” Reports indicate the destruction of 450 buildings in Zeitoun alone over the last nine days – nearly 50 per day.
This current campaign echoes the tactics employed during the 1948 nakba, when Palestinian Arabs were terrorized and driven from their homes as the state of Israel was established. alarmingly, current Israeli leaders have openly discussed the possibility of a “new Nakba,” with some advocating for a disproportionate number of Palestinian deaths for each Israeli life lost.
As residents are pushed south into the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis, they face increasingly dire conditions, confined to an 11-square-mile area already overwhelmed with displaced people. The situation is further exacerbated by a deliberate restriction of essential supplies. Amnesty International has condemned what it calls a “deliberate campaign” of weaponized starvation, citing Israel’s blockade of food, medicine, and other vital resources. At least 266 Palestinians, including 122 children, have died of starvation since October 2023, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Operation Gideon’s Chariots, a US-backed plan, aims to conquer and indefinitely occupy Gaza, ethnically cleanse its Palestinian population, and potentially open the area for israeli resettlement. Former US President Donald Trump has publicly expressed a desire to transform Gaza into a “Riviera of the Middle East.”
The international community is facing growing pressure to intervene. Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor has stated that the widespread destruction is “part of a deliberate Israeli policy: completing a campaign of genocide and erasing Palestinian urban life.” they urge the UN and other international bodies to halt the violence, protect civilians, and hold Israeli leaders accountable.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is currently weighing a genocide case against Israel, having already issued provisional orders to prevent genocidal acts, allow humanitarian aid, and halt attacks on Rafah – orders that Israel is accused of ignoring or violating. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has also issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime minister Benjamin netanyahu and former Defense minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
As of today, Israel’s 683-day assault and siege on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of at least 62,064 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children. Experts believe the actual death toll is significantly higher due to the number of missing individuals presumed buried under rubble. More than 156,500 Palestinians have also been wounded.
Amidst this crisis,
