Thousands of Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square on Thursday, November 28, 2024, expressing hopeful anticipation for teh return of hostages held in Gaza.The gathering followed a deal reached between Israel and Hamas for a hostage release and truce, marking a significant growth toward perhaps ending the ongoing conflict.
Many attendees wore stickers proclaiming “They’re coming back,” and waved both Israeli and United States flags while holding photographs of those held captive. Hostages Square has served as the focal point for weekly rallies advocating for the hostages’ release.
734 Days of Waiting
Laurence Ytzhak, a 54-year-old resident of Tel Aviv, shared the profound emotions of the moment. “We have been waiting for this day for 734 days. We cannot imagine being anywhere else this morning,” Ytzhak stated, reflecting the long period of fear and uncertainty experienced by families and the nation.
While expressing immense relief, Ytzhak also acknowledged the complex emotions surrounding the deal. She described a mixture of joy, anxiety, fear for those still awaiting release, and sorrow for the families who may not experience the return of their loved ones.
Acknowledging Sacrifice
ytzhak also emphasized the sacrifices made by Israeli soldiers during the conflict and in efforts to secure the hostages’ release. She noted the emotional impact of the potential return, stating, “As I speak to you, I get goosebumps… it’s too lovely, and we cannot help but think of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for these hostages.”
