Gaza Humanitarian Foundation Faces Aid Delivery Challenges
Updated June 06, 2025
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), tasked with delivering aid to the Gaza Strip, is struggling amid security concerns and logistical nightmares. The U.S.- and Israel-backed group’s efforts to provide relief to starving Palestinians have been marred by violence and suspensions of operations.
Since GHF began its operations last week, multiple civilians have been killed while attempting to access food distribution centers. The organization has twice suspended its efforts to address security issues. Critics point to a lack of planning for “the last mile,” the crucial process of getting aid from distribution centers to those in need, as a key factor in the ongoing crisis. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s aid delivery system is under scrutiny.
Founded in February, GHF is already on its second leader, Johnnie Moore, an evangelical Christian public-relations executive.Safe Reach Solutions, a firm led by a former CIA official, provides security for distribution sites. Both GHF and SRS are relatively new and face questions regarding their financial backing. The role of these organizations in the Gaza aid effort is being questioned.
Despite the challenges, GHF defended its work in a statement, claiming to have delivered nearly 8.5 million meals “without incident” and emphasizing its commitment to safety and dignity. The organization maintains it is the only reliable provider of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.
Established aid agencies are largely absent from the current effort. Israel severed ties with the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) following allegations of staff involvement in the October 7,2023,terror attack. The UN’s world food Program depleted its resources in late April. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also clashed with the International Commitee of the Red cross. World Central Kitchen, which lost seven workers in an Israeli strike, closed its gaza operations in April. The absence of these experienced organizations has placed added pressure on the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
The Boston Consulting group initially assisted GHF with logistical challenges but withdrew after violence erupted. Moore insists his agency is “demonstrating that it is possible to move vast quantities of food to people who need it most.”
Experts emphasize the importance of optimizing distribution routes and utilizing micro-fulfillment centers to bring aid closer to communities. GHF currently operates only four distribution centers, a meaningful decrease from the 400 previously managed by the UN. This has forced many palestinians to travel long distances for food.
The organization also appeared unprepared for the large crowds converging on distribution sites. The lack of clear communication about food availability, with some announcements reportedly made via military drones, further exacerbated the situation.
While buisness analogies have limitations, the failure to address basic logistical considerations has contributed to the ongoing crisis. A more thoughtful approach, incorporating lessons learned by established companies and experienced aid agencies, could improve the delivery of essential food aid to Palestinians in Gaza.
what’s next
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation faces mounting pressure to improve its aid delivery system. Increased security measures, better logistical planning, and improved communication with the population are crucial to ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most.
