At least 27 people died and more than 90 were wounded Tuesday when Israeli forces opened fire as crowds awaited humanitarian aid at a distribution center in the southern Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health.
Atef Al-hout, director-general of Nasser Medical Complex in Khan younis, reported that 24 of the deceased and 37 of the injured were taken to his facility. he added that the majority of casualties resulted from gunfire during the aid distribution.
the Israel Defense forces (IDF) issued a statement acknowledging a shooting approximately 500 meters from an aid site managed by the U.S.- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The IDF stated that soldiers identified individuals moving toward them, deviating from designated routes.
According to the IDF, “The forces fired evasive shots, and after thay did not move away, additional shots were fired near the individual suspects who were advancing towards the forces.” The IDF also stated that reports of casualties are known and the details of the incident are under investigation regarding humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.

The IDF maintains that it allows the GHF to operate independently, distributing aid to Gaza residents while preventing it from reaching Hamas. They assert that forces do not prevent residents from accessing aid distribution complexes and that the shooting occurred a notable distance from the complex, targeting individuals who posed a threat.
The GHF released a statement saying, “aid distribution was conducted safely and without incident at our site today.” However, the organization acknowledged that the IDF “is investigating whether a number of civilians were injured after moving beyond the designated safe corridor and into a closed military zone.”
The GHF added,”This was an area well beyond our secure distribution site and operations area. We recognise the tough nature of the situation and advise all civilians to remain in the safe corridor when traveling to our distribution sites.”
the GHF’s aid distribution operation has faced criticism and reports of violence. On Sunday, the Hamas-run Ministry of Health reported dozens killed and over 200 wounded by Israeli fire near an aid distribution site close to rafah. The IDF and GHF disputed this account.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an independant investigation into the incident.
