Updated June 08, 2025
A vessel dubbed the Freedom Flotilla is currently sailing toward Gaza, carrying humanitarian aid and activists, including Greta Thunberg, in a bid to challenge Israel’s blockade. The Freedom Flotilla, carrying 12 people, departed from Sicily, Italy, June 1, aiming to deliver essential supplies to palestinians.
The activists seek to deliver rice, baby formula, medical supplies and other necessities. the Freedom Flotilla intends to create a “people’s humanitarian corridor,” according to activist Thiago Ávila. Ávila said the group hopes to challenge what he described as a genocide and ethnic cleansing, adding, “We will not stay silent.”
Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza since 2007, citing security concerns. This siege of Gaza has severely restricted the movement of people and goods, leading to widespread humanitarian challenges.Previous attempts to break the blockade have been met with force. In one instance 15 years ago, Israeli forces killed 10 people aboard a Freedom Flotilla ship.
Thunberg addressed the public before the ship set sail, emphasizing the importance of continued action. “We are doing this because no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep trying,” Thunberg said. “Because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity.”
“We are doing this because no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep trying. Because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity. And no matter how dangerous this mission is. It is no where near as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of a live-streamed genocide.”
The journey is expected to take seven days. Organizers are urging supporters to maintain pressure on their governments to demand an end to the Israeli blockade and occupation of Palestine.
What’s next
the Freedom Flotilla’s progress will be closely monitored as it approaches Gaza. The international community will be watching to see how Israel responds to this latest attempt to deliver aid and challenge the blockade.
