Gemini Live ⁣on Android Adds Captions for Silent ⁣Interactions

updated June 26, ⁤2025

Google has rolled out an update to Gemini Live on Android that introduces ⁤caption support, providing users with a new, quieter way to interact with the AI assistant. The update is being distributed through the Google app, version 16.23,on both stable and beta channels.

Once a Gemini Live session begins, a captions button appears in the top-right corner. Tapping this button activates a floating box displaying a text version of Gemini’s spoken responses. These captions are fixed in the middle of the screen and do not show real-time transcriptions of the user’s speech, though that transcript remains available at the end of the session.

The Gemini Live captions are only visible in⁤ the full-screen Live interface. Exiting this screen will cause the captions to disappear, but they will reappear‍ upon re-entering the interface before the session concludes. Once enabled, the caption setting remains active for subsequent conversations, eliminating the need‍ to reactivate ⁢it each time.

A new ‘Caption preferences’ menu has been added to Gemini’s settings, located under the ‘Interrupt Live responses’ toggle. This menu links ⁣to system-level caption settings, offering users greater control over caption appearance.this Android AI assistant enhancement addresses previous limitations, such as the requirement for a certain volume level to initiate a conversation. Now, users can speak their prompt‍ and read the reply, which is ‍notably useful in quiet environments or without headphones.

The goal of Gemini Live is to facilitate more natural voice conversations with ⁤AI. However, there are situations where spoken responses are not ideal.the new⁢ captions option offers increased flexibility, whether the user is in a quiet ⁤room⁣ or simply prefers reading over listening. This Google app update may seem minor, but it ⁢addresses a practical limitation and demonstrates Google’s commitment to refining Gemini Live based on user feedback. If the feature is not immediately visible, ‍force-stopping⁣ the⁢ Google⁤ app in the‍ phone’s settings may trigger the update.

What’s next

Google is expected to continue refining Gemini⁣ Live based on user feedback, with further updates anticipated to enhance usability and accessibility in various real-world scenarios.
