Google has rolled out an update to Gemini Live on Android that introduces caption support, providing users with a new, quieter way to interact with the AI assistant. The update is being distributed through the Google app, version 16.23,on both stable and beta channels.
Once a Gemini Live session begins, a captions button appears in the top-right corner. Tapping this button activates a floating box displaying a text version of Gemini’s spoken responses. These captions are fixed in the middle of the screen and do not show real-time transcriptions of the user’s speech, though that transcript remains available at the end of the session.
The Gemini Live captions are only visible in the full-screen Live interface. Exiting this screen will cause the captions to disappear, but they will reappear upon re-entering the interface before the session concludes. Once enabled, the caption setting remains active for subsequent conversations, eliminating the need to reactivate it each time.
A new ‘Caption preferences’ menu has been added to Gemini’s settings, located under the ‘Interrupt Live responses’ toggle.
