George R.R. Martin plans seven books in his A song of Ice and Fire series, but only five have been published so far. A Dance with Dragons, the most recent installment, came out in 2011. Martin intends to write The winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.

Martin hasn’t confirmed if the seventh book will be the final one, so readers might see more stories in the future. HBO had to finish the later seasons of its television series based on Martin’s rough outline as he delayed completing the two planned books.
“I wanted to kill more characters, but not the ones they’d already killed in the television version. HBO essentially gave it a happy ending,” Martin told The Hollywood Reporter. Read the full interview here.
