GERB Unleashes Defamation Fury: Asen Vassilev Under Fire in Shocking ‘Cop Attacks’ Scandal
GERB MP Hristo Gadjev referred to the testimony of the former head of the “Customs” Agency, Petya Bankova, who was accused of participating in an organized criminal group and of coercion. They include the name of Asen Vassilev in a case related to the purchase of scanners for customs.
ITN leader Slavi Trifonov immediately showed interest in the case, and explained that he would follow it carefully.
Vassilev rejected the accusations spread by GERB, defining them as “attacks by police forces” and gave specific information about the case in question.
“It wasn’t computers, it was compotes. Comrades from Simeonovo (and Mr. Gadjev) should try a little harder next time.” pointed out Asen Vassilev.
The PP-DB later said that “the empire decided to hit back immediately” after the statement about Peevski was sent.

What does GERB claim?
Gadjev referred to Petya Bankova’s testimony, which included Vasilev’s name in the purchase of scanners.
“In September, Martin Dimitrov and Bozhidar Bojanov raised the issue of “a serious scandal with BGN 100 million of European funds for the purchase of reliable scanners for the Bulgarian customs.” According to them, “The winner was chosen without an open and tender procedure, regardless of the EC requirements and a specific YOU decree.” Again, according to them, this will have a detrimental effect on our acceptance in the Schengen land,” he wrote.
“From Bankova’s testimony, it is clear that this happened on the quick instructions of Asen Vasilev. He had found a way to do this directly from the company “Smiths Detection”, which produces scanners to check them. His it was his idea to do it by negotiating directly, bypassing the PLO. He had hired consultants to tell him exactly how to do it. Through this, Asen Vasilev aimed to receive a commission from the company “Smiths Detection”, as the order included millions. He wanted me to give this company access to all the places where these scanners were to be installed and the necessary information about it. I don’t know what happened because I was detained in this case.”
Asen Vassilev: Attacks by police forces
Asen Vasilev denied the accusations, giving specific information about the contract.
“Comrades from Simeonovo (and Mr. Gadjev) should try a little harder next time. It is not surprising that two days after we cut off Peevski and GERB, the false attacks by the police have started again.”
On August 22, 2023, the “Customs” Agency launched an open competitive procedure under the PPA for public procurement. Several different equipment suppliers can (and do) apply.
Several of the participants appealed the procedure and the Supreme Administrative Court closed it on January 16, 2024. The Customs Agency informed the participants that the procedure was terminated.

In June 2024, the official cabinet (with a new finance minister and a new director of the Customs Agency) decided that it would launch a new classified order, and not an open procedure under the PPA.
As a result of the classified procedure, the cabinet signed a contract for the supply of equipment in June 2024.
