What is MÖRK BORG?

MÖRK BORG is a groundbreaking dark fantasy tabletop roleplaying game created by Pelle Nilsson and Johan Nohr of Stockholm Kartell. Released in 2020, it won three Gold ENNIES Awards, Product of the Year, Best Writing and Best Layout, as well as a Silver Award for Best Game. The dark, dying world of MÖRK BORG lies in the apocalypse, its vile inhabitants cowering in the shadow of godlike, two-headed lizard-eating creatures. Life is short, cheap and full of fear, but despite this, MÖRK BORG is currently enjoyed by thousands of players around the world, and a creative community is thriving around it.

You awaken in Galgenbek, a repulsive collection of shanties and soon-to-be ruins scattered around the Dying Land’s greatest cathedral, dedicated to the apocalyptic stalks of the Two-Headed Hydra. From the cathedral’s blackened spires slithers a voice and a truth: The world is ending. The Two-Headed Hydra demands an offering. It will delay the inevitable end of all things.

There is another voice. In the fetid alleys of the rabble and the scum of the sewers, a rumor spreads that whoever appeases this request will receive the blessing of the High Priestess Josilfa Miguel. She will cleanse the heretic souls and allow them to enter the Pimmering Fields when the time is right.

Those who embark on this desperate quest are known as the Damned Walkers, and you are one of them. You know your foul soul is rotting, and every night, you are tormented by visions of eternal damnation. You need a way out. No matter what.

Gather your team

The cursed walkers in MÖRK BORG Heresy Supreme are no fantasy heroes. This tragic world is dying, and everyone is looking for redemption, fortune, or revenge; you can try to cross your destiny with other walkers and form a party, but they’ll all join you for a reason. Keep everyone’s agenda in mind during your quest, and you just might get along. Get the wrong companion, and they’ll turn their backs on you. Or stick a dagger in you. “Friendly” is a foreign word in the cruel, dying world of MÖRK BORG. Remember, when someone offers help!

Explore a dying world

The world outside Galgenbeck’s walls is divided into multiple areas, each worse than the other. Locations and adventures are dynamically generated based on your progress and the quests you will stumble upon. Quests, adventures, bosses and special items reset on each playthrough. Explore the dying world, but don’t get lost in it. You won’t get out alive.

Getting better (or worse)

MÖRK BORG Heresy Supreme has no XP or anything like that. Instead, you level up by performing certain actions during your adventures. As you level up, some of your character’s abilities get better, but some get worse. The more you level up, the greater the chance that you’ll lose something in the process. Can’t teach an old goblin new tricks! They’ll kill you.

The world is tearing apart before the end of days, as written in the Nechrubel Calendar. Tribulations are catastrophic events that affect the entire world and the poor creatures that live in it. The more you play and the deeper you crawl into the filth, the more tribulations you get. They can be triggered at the end of your adventure, and the closer you are to the Apocalypse, the greater the chance of this. There are rumors that these tribulations can be postponed. Foolish claims that they can be prevented, but no one has, and these are unproven heresies. Whatever the price of this unholy wonder, it cannot be paid.

The world is unforgiving, but Cursed Walkers have a secret trick up their sleeve: omens that can be used to deal maximum damage, re-roll ability checks in critical situations, absorb damage from critical hits, or guarantee safe outcomes using scroll powers. So remember, if you wish, you can rely on the vagaries of alternate worlds to tangle with the eyes of the terrible Watcher… just don’t tell the Inquisition.

Arcane Disaster

Some professions have access to the power of esoteric and ancient scrolls. In the dying world of MÖRK BORG, there is never a guarantee that such sorcery will be summoned. Each scroll has a chance to trigger a mysterious disaster, and no one can foresee what kind of disaster it will bring. You may get dizzy and start vomiting… or explode. However, some mysterious disasters may even have better effects than expected. Use at your own risk.

RPG Elements

Each character has four abilities – Strength, Agility, Presence, and Toughness – which determine your likelihood of survival. They affect mechanics and interactions with the world, enemies, and other characters. Some encounters, events, and choices require you to roll a d20 modified by the relevant ability. You should always put your life in the hands of the dice roll. That’s why it’s called a die roll.

The End is Near (Forever)

Once you have the relic the two-headed serpent demands, take your ugly bag of bones and blood to the unfortunate Valley of the Undying to face the terrifying presence of Verhu and Gorgh, the Speaker of Truth and the most worshipped of the serpent’s heads, and his jealous brothers. Can you appease them in time and purify your rotting soul by delaying the end of the world? Will this torment ever end? Or will your repeated suffering open your soul to the heresy of the Supreme Being?
