Ghislaine Maxwell’s legal team has laid out a series of stringent conditions for her potential testimony before a congressional committee, including a demand for “formal immunity” and a plea for clemency. The move comes as pressure mounts on the Trump management to release further details surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein case.
Maxwell’s Terms for Testimony
In a letter addressed to the oversight committee, Maxwell’s lawyer outlined specific requirements that must be met before she would consider cooperating. These demands include:
formal Immunity: The letter explicitly states that Maxwell “cannot risk further criminal exposure in a politically charged environment without formal immunity.”
Off-Site Interview: The interview should not take place at the correctional facility where she is currently held.
Advance Question submission: The committee must provide her with questions in advance of any deposition.
Delayed Deposition: The deposition should not be scheduled until after the resolution of her Supreme court petition and her forthcoming habeas petition.
Should these conditions not be met, Maxwell’s lawyer warned that she “will have no choice but to invoke her Fifth Amendment rights.”
Committee Rejects Congressional immunity
A spokesperson for the oversight committee responded on Tuesday afternoon, stating that while the committee “will respond to ms Maxwell’s attorney soon,” it “will not consider granting congressional immunity for her testimony.”
A Plea for Clemency
Adding another layer to the negotiations, Maxwell’s lawyer also made a direct appeal for clemency. The letter states,”Of course,in the alternative,if Ms Maxwell were to receive clemency, she would be willing – and eager – to testify openly and honestly,in public, before Congress in Washington,DC.” Maxwell’s legal team expressed her eagerness to “share the truth and to dispel the many misconceptions and misstatements that have plagued this case from the beginning.”
DOJ Meetings and Public Scrutiny
this development follows recent meetings between Department of Justice officials and maxwell, wich took place over two days last week. These discussions occurred amidst increasing pressure on the Trump administration to provide greater openness regarding the Epstein case.
Earlier this month, the Justice Department faced bipartisan backlash, including from some Trump supporters, after announcing it would not release further documents related to the Epstein case. This decision contradicted earlier promises made by president Trump and US Attorney General Pam Bondi to do so,leading to significant public and political scrutiny.
