New Breaks Discovered: ”La Chupacabra” and “Bullsharks”
Brothers Kai and Ridge Lenny, alongside Basque surfer Natxo Gonzalez, have identified and surfed previously unknown big wave spots off the coast of El Salvador. The surfers have named the breaks “La Chupacabra” and “Bullsharks,” referencing a legendary mythical creature and the potential marine life, respectively.
The finding was aided by local surfers,Ridge Lenny’s analysis of Google Earth imagery, and support from Red Bull. The newly discovered sandbar is believed to have only been surfed once before, by a local resident.
Remote location and Initial impressions
Despite El Salvador’s relatively small Pacific coastline of 186 miles (300 kilometers), much of it remains unexplored due to challenging access, unless utilizing aerial assistance. The crew initially spotted the break from a helicopter, and were initially surprised by its characteristics.
Natxo Gonzalez described the initial view: “When we first looked at it, we couldn’t even see the wave because it was below sea level, so we were tripping. All we could see was just the (lip) ripping down the line.”
Wave Characteristics and Comparisons
Kai Lenny likened the potential of the wave to that of Namibia, stating,
“On the right conditions it could be just like Namibia (only) right.”
ridge Lenny emphasized the wave’s power, noting it differed significantly from the typical El Salvador surf experience. “Kai and I had to use a lot of our big-wave knowledge out there as it was a heavy wave. When I think of El Salvador, I don’t typically think of waves like this…I think of mellower, fun, rippable point breaks. This thing was a freight-train.”
A Lifelong Pursuit Realized
ridge Lenny expressed the fulfillment of a long-held ambition. “I think that’s the first time in my life I’ve looked at a spot on Google Earth and actually went, figured it out, and saw it. I’ve dreamt of doing that my entire life ever since I was young.”
