Italian cyclist Alessio Martinelli, a rookie at the Giro d’Italia, is fortunate to have escaped serious injury after a dramatic crash during Tuesday’s stage 16. The Giro stage was marked by treacherous conditions and numerous falls.
Martinelli plunged into a ravine after sliding off the road on a bend. Rescue crews extracted the 24-year-old on a stretcher. He remained conscious throughout the ordeal. His VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè team reported that he suffered trauma to his chin and right gluteus.

Adam Blythe, reporting live, indicated that Martinelli fell approximately 10-15 meters into the wooded area. Images from the race showed rescue personnel working to secure Martinelli and retrieve his bike.
The incident drew comparisons to Remco Evenepoel’s fall at Il Lombardia in 2020, where he suffered serious injuries. Martinelli’s crash was one of many during a challenging stage characterized by high mountains and heavy rain.
