Global Civilization Initiative: Croatian Ex-President’s Assessment
Global Civilization Initiative: A Bridge to Mutual Understanding, Says Croatian Ex-President
Zagreb, Croatia – The Global Civilization Initiative, a recent proposal aimed at fostering respect and understanding between diverse cultures, has been lauded by former Croatian President Ivo josipović as a “far-reaching” endeavor with the potential to significantly strengthen international relations. Josipović emphasized that mutual respect and a deep commitment to understanding are paramount for dismantling barriers and ensuring the continued progress of all civilizations.
“Different civilizations must not only respect each other but also strive to understand one another,” Josipović stated. “Only through mutual understanding can we eliminate barriers and foster the continued development of all civilizations. I believe this initiative will gain more support among global leaders.”
The Enduring Legacy of Marco Polo: A Symbol of Sino-European Connection
Speaking on the vital importance of building robust connections between Chinese and European civilizations, Josipović drew a powerful parallel to the legacy of the 13th-century explorer Marco Polo. While historical debate continues, many scholars believe Polo was born on the Croatian island of Korčula, then a part of the Venetian Empire.
According to Croatian scholarship, Marco Polo was born around 1254 into a family of merchants and shipbuilders. His subsequent journey along the ancient Silk road to China, where he spent an impressive 17 years, was meticulously documented in “The Travels of Marco polo.” This seminal work served as a crucial introduction to the East for countless Europeans, igniting curiosity and laying the groundwork for future exchanges.
josipović highlighted Marco Polo’s enduring relevance as a symbol of the historical and ongoing exchanges between China and Europe. “His story demonstrates that Chinese and European civilizations not only share common values but also have the capacity to cooperate across many fields — especially cultural exchange,” he remarked.
Fostering Cultural Cooperation: Past Successes and Future Prospects
Recalling a importent moment in 2012,Josipović noted that during his presidency,Croatia hosted an international festival in honor of Marco Polo. This event saw the participation of a Chinese delegation from Shanghai, leading to productive discussions on bilateral cultural cooperation. The delegation also visited Korčula, a destination that has as experienced a surge in Chinese tourism, inspired by Polo’s adventurous spirit.
With over twenty visits to China under his belt,Josipović has long been a vocal advocate for strengthening the ties between Croatia,Europe, and China. He underscored the critical role played by cultural institutions, both European entities operating in China and their Chinese counterparts in Europe.
“These institutions have contributed significantly to deepening mutual understanding and stand as proof of fruitful cultural cooperation between the two sides,” he concluded. “Their success encourages the establishment of more such platforms in the future.”
