Global electric vehicle sales jumped 35% in the second quarter compared to the first three months of the year, hitting record levels across 50 countries as escalating fuel costs driven by energy supply disruptions forced drivers away from traditional gasoline vehicles.
Fuel Prices Climb Following Supply Disruptions
Fuel prices climbed sharply in numerous global markets between February 23 and May 4 following supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz. Malaysia experienced a 56.3% spike in gasoline prices, followed by Pakistan at 54.9%, the United States at 44.5%, South Africa at 33.1%, Canada at 31.9%, China at 21.7%, the United Kingdom at 19.2%, South Korea at 19%, and Germany at 13.7%.
This sustained increase in the cost of conventional fuel directly impacted vehicle market shares.

Consumer Shifts and Dealership Trends in Germany and Abroad
High fuel costs pushed German consumers toward electric vehicles, boosting both new and used EV sales. New pure electric car registrations in Germany reached approximately 88,600 vehicles in September, marking a 95% increase compared to the same month last year. Konstantin Gall, a car expert at auditing and consulting firm EY, stated that الحافز المخصص للسيارات الكهربائية يؤتي ثماره، وبقوة
though he cautioned that the boom relies heavily on tax funds and could reverse if subsidies end.
The rising cost of gasoline and diesel in Germany also drove used car buyers toward electric models. Data from market watchdog DAT showed that residual values for three-year-old electric cars rose by 1.4 percentage points between May and August, while values for gasoline cars fell 0.4 percentage points and diesel cars dropped 1.1 percentage points.
DAT data noted that used electric vehicles left dealer lots significantly faster, with an average resting time of 74 days compared to 84 days for gasoline vehicles and 92 days for diesel cars, which faced greater selling difficulties. German auto club figures showed EVs accounted for 5.3% of total vehicle ownership transfers in August, up from 3.9% in the previous year.
Electric Vehicle Sales Grow Across Global Markets
Sales doubled nearly in markets such as Brazil, India, Australia, and Vietnam between March and June compared to the same period in 2025, while sales grew across more than 90 countries over the year. In China, where EV and hybrid market shares reached about 55%, the electric fleet contributed to eliminating about 34 million tons of oil during the first half of the year.

Russia saw EV and hybrid sales climb to over 83,000 units between January and August, up from 43,000 in the same 2025 period, driven by fuel shortages from Ukrainian attacks. In Australia, sales surged 117% to 157,957 electric vehicles during the first half of the year, translating to one EV sold roughly every 100 seconds while petrol and diesel sales dropped 14%.
