This slower absorption reduces the intensity of alcohol’s effects on the brain, according to a new pilot study published Wednesday in the journal Scientific Reports.
Researchers found that individuals taking GLP-1 medications experienced a less pronounced effect from alcohol consumption. Essentially, the feeling of intoxication is lessened because the body processes alcohol more gradually.

Why This Matters: Understanding the Connection

This study provides a potential description, linking the drugs’ impact on gastric emptying - the rate at which food and liquids leave the stomach – to alcohol absorption. “People who drink know there’s a difference between nursing a glass of wine and downing a shot of whiskey,” said researcher Dr. David Malcolm, from the Fralin Biomedical Institute at Virginia Tech, in a news release. “This study suggests GLP-1 medications may mimic the effect of sipping slowly, spreading out the alcohol’s impact over time.”
Study Details and Limitations
The pilot study involved a small number of participants. researchers measured blood alcohol concentrations after participants consumed alcohol while either taking a GLP-1 medication or a placebo. The results consistently showed lower and slower-rising blood alcohol levels in the GLP-1 group.
