For individuals managing type 2 diabetes (T2D), newer medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists have become increasingly popular for their effectiveness in controlling blood sugar and promoting weight loss. Though, recent research indicates a potential trade-off: an increased risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) compared to another class of diabetes drugs, SGLT2 inhibitors.

A study presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2024 annual meeting revealed that patients with T2D taking GLP-1s experienced a higher incidence of GERD than those taking SGLT2 inhibitors. The research, analyzing data from a large cohort of individuals, suggests a statistically important association between GLP-1 use and the development or worsening of GERD symptoms.
While both GLP-1s and SGLT2 inhibitors are effective in managing type 2 diabetes, they work through different mechanisms.
