(New York/Los Angeles = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kang Geon-taek Jeong Yun-seop = As the shortage of automotive semiconductors continues, it was found that US automaker General Motors (GM) has caused a major setback in production.

GM announced on the 1st (local time) that in the second quarter of this year, it had an unfinished car inventory of 95,000 units, excluding those parts, due to a shortage of certain parts, including semiconductors, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and AP.

Most of these unfinished cars were assembled in June, and the company predicted that they could be completed and sold by the end of this year.

The 95,000 unfinished cars accounted for 16% of GM’s total sales of 582,000 units in the second quarter, AP pointed out.

Production disruption due to the shortage of parts is expected to have a significant impact on GM’s 2Q earnings. GM’s expected second-quarter net profit of $1.6 billion to $1.9 billion was significantly lower than the market estimate of $2.46 billion compiled by FactSet, a financial information company.

GM’s car sales in the second quarter were down 15% from the same period last year, and sales in the first half were down 18%, respectively.

GM isn’t the only automaker experiencing setbacks.

Hyundai Motor Company also announced on the same day that its sales in the US market (343,867 units) in the first half of this year fell by 16% compared to the same period last year.

Hyundai Motor Company’s sales volume in June was the highest this year, but it was still 13% lower than in the same month of the previous year, WSJ reported.

Hyundai Motor emphasized that this is a better level than the industry’s overall sales forecast for June (15.8% ↓).

Kia disclosed that sales in the US market in June (65,142 units) increased 12% from the previous month, and sold 333,340 units in the first half of the year, including EV6 electric vehicles.

However, the performance in the first half was lower than the same period last year (378,511 units), which did not include EV6 sales.

Consulting firm Alex Partners predicted that the shortage of semiconductors for vehicles, triggered by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in 2020, will continue until 2024, suggesting the possibility of a prolonged shortage of parts.

However, the auto industry expects that consumers’ preference for new cars will continue to be strong despite prolonged inflation and the prospect of a recession.

“We’re still seeing more demand than supply,” said Jose Muñoz, Hyundai Motor’s global chief operating officer and president of the Americas.
