Gmail App Update Brings Left-Aligned Navigation Rail to Android Tablets

Gmail Update Brings Left-Aligned Navigation Bar to Android Tablets

A recent update to the Gmail app has introduced a left-aligned navigation rail for Android tablets, bringing it in line with the design seen on foldable Android phones.

Previously, Android tablets displayed up to four tabs at the bottom of the screen when opening the Gmail app. However, the latest design update now aligns these tabs vertically on the left edge, similar to the layout on foldable smartphones such as the Pixel Fold.

With the new vertical arrangement, the tabs displayed from the top include ‘メニュー’, ‘新規作成’, ‘メール’, ‘チャット’, ‘スペース’, ‘Meet’. Unlike the previous bottom placement, these tabs remain visible even when scrolling through the screen.

While there are no other significant changes, this update brings the Gmail app in line with other Google apps, ensuring a consistent navigation experience for users.

The new Gmail app navigation bar for Android tablets has been introduced in version 2023.11.12.x. However, due to server side effects, the new layout may not immediately appear even after updating the app. Users are advised to wait for the changes to take effect if the bottom menu layout persists.

The Gmail app already had a left-aligned navigation rail on foldable Android phones, but a recent update has brought it to Gmail on Android tablets as well.

For example, on the Pixel Tablet, previously when opening the Gmail app,[メール]、[チャット]、[スペース]、[Meet]Up to four tabs were displayed at the bottom of the screen, but the new design now displays them vertically on the left edge, similar to foldable smartphones such as the Pixel Fold.

As they are arranged vertically, from the top[メニュー]、[新規作成]、[メール]、[チャット]、[スペース]、[Meet]tab will now be displayed. Unlike when it is displayed at the bottom, it does not disappear even if you scroll the screen.

Apart from this, there are no other changes, but Gmail will finally use the same navigation rails as other Google apps, allowing you to use it without any discomfort.

The Gmail app navigation bar for Android tablets has been introduced in version 2023.11.12.x, which was released the other day, but due to server side effects, it may not be reflected even if it’ the app has been updated. So, if the menu is still displayed at the bottom even after the update, please wait for a while (I didn’t see it mirrored yet).
