Appointment and Handover

Kwame Ntow Amoah, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), was formally appointed Chairman of the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO) during the seventh APPO National oil Companies CEOs Meeting in Accra on February 29, 2024. The handover ceremony saw outgoing Chairman Bienvenido Nguema Envo, of Equatorial Guinea’s national oil company gepetrol, officially transfer leadership to Amoah.

A Call to Collective Action

Amoah described his appointment as a “call to action,” emphasizing the need for a unified response to global challenges facing Africa’s oil and gas industry. He stated that the sector is undergoing notable changes driven by factors such as financing constraints, technological advancements, workforce development needs, and the pressures of the global energy transition. According to Amoah, the collective vision is to responsibly, sustainably, and strategically utilize Africa’s substantial hydrocarbon resources.

Amoah outlined several key priorities for his tenure as Chairman. These include:

• Strengthening Collaboration: Focusing on initiatives like the Africa Energy Bank to facilitate investment and development within the sector.
• Innovation-Driven Partnerships: Building partnerships to foster technological advancements and improve efficiency.
• Enhanced Trade and Investment: Encouraging closer economic ties between African petroleum-producing nations.

He also stressed the importance of trust and self-reliance, asserting that “Africa’s energy future must be led by African voices, African institutions, and a strong African resolve.”

Outgoing Chairman’s Remarks

Bienvenido Nguema Envo, the outgoing Chairman, lauded APPO as a crucial platform for sharing knowledge and experiences in navigating the complexities of the oil and gas industry. He acknowledged the challenges facing the sector but expressed optimism about APPO’s ability to address them collaboratively.
