This new immigration permit, tentatively named the “Trump Golden Card,” is designed to offer millionaires the same benefits as permanent residents, who currently hold the well-known “Green Card.” Trump suggested that the card could bear his own name, adding a personal touch to the initiative.

“This will attract many people to our country, who will be rich and have been very successful and that will spend a lot of money, pay many taxes and give work to many people. We believe it will be great success,” Trump said, emphasizing the economic benefits of the program.

Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, who was present during the announcement, provided additional details. He explained that the new program would replace the existing EB-5 investor visa program, which allows foreign investors and their families to obtain permanent residence in the United States through substantial investment.

Lutnick asserted that the EB-5 program was “fraudulent,” justifying the need for a replacement. “We are going to make sure that they are wonderful global world-class citizens,” he said, as reported by The New York Times.

Trump further elaborated on the target audience for the “Golden Card,” stating, “This visa will be (for) people with money and people who believe jobs.” He even joked, “although with humor—even a Russian oligarch could get this new card: ‘Yes. (…) possibly.'”

“I know some Russian oligarchs that are good people. It is possible. (Although) they are no longer as rich as before, I think they can afford five million dollars,” Trump added, highlighting the potential for attracting high-net-worth individuals from various backgrounds.

The primary goal of the “Golden Card” is to generate revenue for the government. Trump emphasized that some companies would be willing to cover the cost to bring qualified workers to the United States, further boosting the economy.

Lydic also commented sarcastically, “I mean, I suppose it is better than the ancient way to become a citizen, that it was to marry Donald Trump, but still.” She continued, “I feel that immigrant stories will be much less inspiring in the future: ‘My grandfather arrived in this country with nothing more than 5 million dollars and the clothes of his five-piece trunk Louis Vuitton customized.'”

Jimmy Kimmel, another prominent comedian, joked, “Basically, this is what it does in Mar-A-Lago. He sells memberships for a field club, but this club is, in reality, our country. (…) The land of the free, and for ‘free’ I mean five million dollars.”

EB-5 Visa Program

The current EB-5 visa program, established through the 1990 immigration law, has been a contentious issue.
