Google’s AI-Powered Search Expands to Five New Languages
Google is significantly expanding the reach of its AI-powered search experiance, known as AI Mode, to include Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Indonesian, and Brazilian Portuguese. Launched initially in English in May, this expansion marks a major step toward a truly global AI-driven search capability.
The rollout isn’t simply a matter of translation. According to Hema Budaraju, Vice President of Product Management at Google Search, building a globally relevant search engine requires a deep understanding of local nuances and information ecosystems.Budaraju explained in a recent blog post that Google has leveraged its custom version of the Gemini 2.5 model to achieve substantial improvements in language understanding.
This enhanced language understanding is crucial for delivering AI-powered search results that are not only accurate but also locally relevant and useful. The company’s investment in Gemini 2.5 allows AI Mode to better interpret context and provide more insightful responses in each supported language.
As of today, September 9, 2024, AI Mode remains unavailable in Japanese, though google anticipates a swift rollout. the addition of these five languages will empower millions more users worldwide to experience the benefits of AI-enhanced search, including summarized overviews and more conversational interactions with Google Search.
