Google Expands AI Mode Access, Adds Visual Search and Continuity Features
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Google is broadening access to its “AI Mode” search function and introducing new features designed to enhance the user experience, the company announced Wednesday.
AI Mode Now available to More Users
Effective May 1, Google removed the waiting list for AI Mode, making it accessible to any user 18 years or older via Google Labs. Previously, access had been limited to a select group of users.
The company is also planning to integrate AI Mode more directly into the standard search environment. Google will soon begin testing an AI Mode tab at the top of the search screen for some users in the United States.
Upgraded AI Capabilities
AI Mode, initially launched in March, offers more advanced capabilities than the existing “AI Overview.” It leverages the Gemini 2.0 model to provide more in-depth answers to complex queries, positioning it as a competitor to services like perplexity AI and ChatGPT Search.
Visual Data Cards Enhance search
the update includes a visual information card function, designed to present search results in a more intuitive format. When searching for local businesses such as restaurants, shops, or salons, users will see results displayed as cards with photos, combining local information with product data. This feature is powered by Google’s shopping graph, which encompasses over 45 billion product listings globally.
For example, a search for “folding camping chairs for backpacking under $100″ will display a list of recommended products with real-time prices, shipping information, and retail links. Similarly, a search for ”vintage shops selling modern furniture nearby” will provide real-time congestion data, location information, phone numbers, and directions.
Search Continuity for Extended Research
Google has also introduced a search continuity function, allowing users to resume previous searches within AI Mode. On desktop, a new left panel enables users to revisit previous search records, review previously provided information, and ask follow-up questions. This feature is intended to be particularly useful for long-term projects or tasks requiring repeated searches.
