Google AI Studio Free Tier: What’s the Future for Developers?
Updated June 8, 2025
Google is addressing concerns about the future of its AI Studio free tier. The clarification comes amid changes to query limits for AI Pro subscribers using the Gemini app and planned modifications to AI Studio, a developer tool providing direct access to Gemini and other Google models.
AI Studio offers developers fine-grained controls and fewer restrictions compared to the consumer-focused gemini app. A third access point, the Gemini API, facilitates integration into third-party applications. The primary intended audience for AI Studio is developers, while the Gemini app is designed for ease of use as a consumer assistant.

Recent adjustments to the Gemini app’s query limits sparked debate, particularly among coders who found the free Google AI Studio offering more generous than the $19.99 per month AI Pro subscription. Google then announced that AI Studio would transition to a “fully API key based” system, raising fears of potential costs for continued access.
Logan Kilpatrick, Google AI studio and Gemini API lead, addressed these concerns, stating that the “Google AI Studio free tier isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.”
Moving AI Studio to be API key based does not mean you won’t get free access to stuff. We have a free tier in the API used by millions of developers (more peopel than use the UI experience, by design).
While the Gemini API offers a free tier, it currently lacks free access to 2.5 Pro,which is available in AI Studio and the Gemini app.
Many folks mentioned 2.5 Pro as not being available for free in the API, this is in large as we offered it for free in the UI as well so we were giving out double free compute in a world where we have a huge amount of demand. I expect there will continue to be a free tier for many models in the future (though subject to many things like how the model is, how expensive it is to run, etc), and 2.5 Pro will hopefully be back in the free tier (we are exploring ways to do this, lifetime limits, different incentives etc)
Some users have been leveraging AI Studio as a more advanced alternative to the Gemini app. For those seeking the original, more generous usage limits of the Gemini app, the $250 per month Google AI Ultra plan is now required.
What’s next
The future path for free pro users and developers remains to be seen as Google explores options for maintaining a free tier while managing resource demands. Kilpatrick said the company is exploring ways to bring 2.5 Pro back into the free tier, including lifetime limits and different incentives.
