Google pauses AI “Ask Photos” Rollout Amid User Experience Concerns

Google has temporarily stopped the rollout of its “Ask Photos” feature, an AI-powered tool within google Photos. The feature, which uses Gemini AI models, allows users to search their photo libraries using natural language.
Product Manager Jamie Aspinall announced the pause on X, citing issues with latency, quality, and overall user experience. The “Ask photos” feature had been gradually released to a small group of users.
Aspinall said the rollout would be paused for a small number of users while the team addresses these concerns. He anticipates a more refined version will be available in about two weeks, restoring the promised speed and accuracy.
The pause comes amid increasing scrutiny of AI-powered features. “Ask Photos” uses a specialized version of Gemini AI to understand and interpret photo content, including text within images.
Google also announced improvements to the overall search functionality within Google Photos. Users can now perform more accurate searches by using quotes to find exact text matches in filenames,camera models,captions,and embedded text. Search results will also include visual matches even without quotes.
This update builds upon features announced earlier this year at Google I/O 2024, aiming to make photo searches more intuitive by incorporating multimodal AI capabilities.
