Google Maps is rolling out new artificial intelligence protections to combat fake reviews and fraudulent business listings, leveraging its Gemini AI models to detect suspicious activity and safeguard the accuracy of location-based information.
The initiative, announced on April 16, 2026, introduces three key measures designed to strengthen trust in Business Profiles across the platform. First, Gemini models are being deployed to identify manipulated place edits, such as false changes to business names, addresses, or operating hours. Second, Google has upgraded its systems to proactively block review extortion scams before they are published, where bad actors attempt to extort money from businesses by threatening to leave fake negative reviews. Third, verified Business Profile owners will now receive proactive email alerts when suspicious activity is detected on their listings, enabling faster response to potential abuse.
According to Google’s 2025 Trust and Safety Report, referenced in the announcement, the company’s combined use of automated systems and human analysts resulted in the blocking or removal of over 292 million policy-violating reviews during the year. More than 1 billion helpful reviews were published, underscoring the volume of legitimate user contributions. In parallel, Google blocked 79 million inaccurate or unverified edits to Business Profiles to maintain factual accuracy in core business details.
The scale of enforcement extended to account-level actions, with over 782,000 accounts violating Google’s policies having restrictions placed on their ability to post content. More than 13 million fake Business Profiles were identified and removed throughout 2025, reflecting the persistent challenge of fraudulent listings attempting to exploit the platform’s open contribution model.
These developments build on Google’s ongoing investment in AI-driven content moderation, which has previously included the use of machine learning to detect fake five-star reviews and alert users to suspicious activity. The integration of Gemini represents a significant advancement in the platform’s ability to understand context and intent in user-generated content, improving detection accuracy for sophisticated forms of abuse such as coordinated spam campaigns or location-based scams.
Google emphasizes that maintaining the reliability of Maps data requires continuous adaptation due to the sheer scale of contributions. In 2025 alone, users submitted over 1 billion reviews and suggested approximately 80 million updates to business information, including hours, phone numbers, and website links. This volume creates both valuable local insights and significant risks, necessitating automated systems capable of operating at speeds far beyond manual review processes.
The company states that its goal is to ensure that information on Google Maps remains helpful and trustworthy for users navigating local businesses, while protecting legitimate business owners from harmful or deceptive content. By combining AI innovation with policy enforcement and user notifications, Google aims to stay ahead of evolving abuse tactics in an increasingly digital local economy.
