Mission Objectives and the New Cosmic Atlas
The spacecraft is designed to provide what NASA officials describe as a new atlas of the universe. Utilizing its infrared capabilities, the Roman Space Telescope will observe ancient light emitted billions of years ago to trace this expansion history. The observatory is engineered to operate alongside other prominent instruments. While the James Webb Space Telescope offers greater precision and power for targeted observations, Roman provides the broad survey capacity needed for statistical astronomy. Journey to the Operational Orbit
Following its liftoff at 7:26 a.m. local time on Sunday from the Florida launch site, the spacecraft initiated a journey spanning approximately 100 days.
