Jakarta – A significant inquiry is underway in Indonesia, casting a shadow over a ample deal involving Google’s Chromebooks and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. Prosecutors are examining allegations of bribery and corruption, with a particular focus on a proposed 30% co-investment from Google in the ministry’s Data and Communication Technology (ICT) procurement.
The Chromebook Connection and Suspicions of Influence
The core of the investigation revolves around the procurement of Chromebooks for the ministry. Prosecutors have uncovered a crucial detail: Google’s investment in PT Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GoTo). This investment has raised serious questions about whether it may have unduly influenced the selection process for the Chromebooks. gojek, a prominent tech company founded by Nadiem Makarim, merged with Tokopedia in 2021 to form the super-app giant GoTo.
The Indonesian Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has been actively pursuing this line of inquiry.Their timeline of events indicates that representatives from PRA,a name previously linked to the investigation,met with the then-Minister Nadiem Makarim in February and April of 2020. these meetings were reportedly centered on the concept of ICT procurement within the ministry.
Key Figures and the Co-Investment Proposal
Following these initial discussions, the investigation points to Nadiem makarim’s former special staffer, identified as Jurist Tan (JT), as a key player. Jurist Tan is alleged to have followed up on these meetings by proposing a 30% co-investment from Google. This co-investment was specifically tied to the ministry’s ICT procurement, which included the controversial ChromeOS devices.
The gravity of these allegations has led to Jurist Tan being named a suspect in the case. Alongside him, other individuals have also been identified as suspects, including former ministry consultant Ibrahim Arief, Director of Elementary Education Sri Wahyuningsih, and Director of Junior High Education mulatsyah.

The AGO has been diligently working to unravel the complexities of this case. To date,the agency has reportedly questioned a substantial number of individuals,including 80 witnesses and three experts,to gather extensive evidence.
The investigation into Google’s involvement in the ministry’s ICT procurement, especially concerning the Chromebook deal and the alleged co-investment, remains a significant focus.
