Government Reviewing Legal Basis and Timing for Punishing Medical School Professors Amid Mass Resignations and Temporary Absences

◀ Again ▶

Amid a series of mass resignations and temporary absences of medical school professors, it has been confirmed that the government is reviewing the legal basis and timing for punishing these medical school professors.

However, the government believes that the actual number of medical professors who have resigned en masse is not large.

This is the report of journalist Park So-hee.

Professors at the “Big 5” large hospitals in the metropolitan area, including Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, have all decided to take a collective leave.

The government has repeatedly called for a rollback of mass resignations and dismissals.

“They say there will be mass resignations and closures, but I believe they will protect patients’ lives until the end.”

However, the government believes that the volume of resignation letters submitted by medical school professors is not high.

According to internal statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare reported by MBC, as of the 24th, among 19,550 specialists from 88 hospitals and 40 medical schools, 1,298 had submitted letters of resignation, or 6.6% of the total.

Based on the number of full-time professors, 775 out of 11,961 people from 13 hospitals submitted a collective resignation letter.

It was also confirmed that the government is considering whether and when legal disciplinary action will be taken against professors who have resigned.

″What about the class action, does it violate the relevant laws? I’m just saying that we are also considering these aspects.”

Indeed, according to the internal review plan of the revised version, it is believed that collective resignations and temporary absences can be punished or regulated as “collective acts unrelated to official functions” under the National Public Service Law and the Private School Law both for national and private university professors.

The government interprets that collective resignations constitute grounds for disciplinary action, so even if submitted, the resignations will not take effect immediately.

A government official said: “We will continue our dialogue efforts until the end of April, but if there are no results, we are considering starting disciplinary proceedings in May.”

Meanwhile, police also searched and seized Medical Association president-elect Lim Hyun-taek, who will begin his term on the first of next month.
