Government’s Alternative Plan for Medical School Expansion Sparks Controversy Among Professors and Universities

The government has taken a step back from “increasing medical schools by 2,000 students”.

If the 32 universities whose share of medical schools increased this time want it, they will reduce the size of the increase by up to 50%.

A group of medical school professors said, “This disproves that there is no scientific basis for the 2,000 increase,” and urged the discussion to start from the beginning.

Yesterday the government presented for the first time an alternative plan to reduce the number of medical school expansions to 2,000, as it had until now maintained.

This means that only for the 2025 school year will universities be able to voluntarily determine the number of students between 50 and 100% of the size of the increase.

“We decided to actively protect medical students and normalize medical education, providing a clue to resolving conflicts in the medical field.”

In addition to the six national universities that have proposed this policy, all 32 universities whose seats have been increased can reduce the number of students if they wish.

The number of medical school entrance exams could be cut in half next year, from the current 2,000 to 1,000.

Universities must submit proposals to change the college admissions process to the Korea University Association by the 30th of this month at the latest.

Therefore, it is expected that the actual extent of reducing the number of medical schools will be finalized within the next month after the resolution of the Korean University Council.

However, a senior official from the Office of the President said that universities will independently adjust the number of students they recruit this year only, and that the 2,000 increase will be maintained in the 2026 university admissions process.

In response to the government’s announcement, the Emergency Response Committee of the National Medical University said: “On scientific grounds, this disproves that the government’s claim that the number of students was at least 2,000 was unfounded” and urged : “The increase in medical schools should be reconsidered from the beginning.”

“If there is no government action – he underlined – the professor’s resignation will take place as planned on the 25th”.

The 25th marks one month since medical school professors began submitting their collective resignations, and according to civil law, resignations can be processed automatically one month after expressing one’s intention to resign.

The group of medical school professors further stated: “In long-term emergency medical situations, treatment for outpatients and inpatients has no choice but to be rescheduled due to the professors’ mental and physical limitations.” .

Despite the government’s suggestion of an alternative, medical school professors maintained their “rediscuss from the beginning” position with just five days left before the deadline.
