Government’s Halt on Medical School Expansion After General Election Defeat: A Report by Journalist Park So-hee

◀ Again ▶

As the health crisis continues, patients experience continued inconvenience, but after the general elections which ended in a crushing defeat for the ruling party, the government’s discussions or attempts at dialogue on increasing the number of medical schools appear to have stop.

The Prime Minister and the President’s Office staff take responsibility for the general election results and express their gratitude, but fail to find direction.

The medical community has called for a halt to the rise of medical schools in response to public sentiment confirmed by the general election.

Journalist Park So-hee will report.

After the residents left last February, the government held meetings almost every day and appealed for their return.

″I would like to address this message to all the majors. We invite you once again to return to the field as soon as possible.

However, at 9pm on general election day, when vote counting was in full swing, the government urgently canceled the briefing scheduled for the following day.

The main script scheduled for today has been reduced to a heavy version and the briefing has also been omitted.

While the Prime Minister and the President’s Office staff expressed their gratitude after the general elections, the policy of increasing medical schools also seems to be drifting. An official from the Ministry of Health and Welfare said, “There is nothing we can say at this time” and “We are examining the intentions of the president’s office.”

However, he added, “because medical reform enjoys high public support, it is very likely that existing policy will be followed.”

However, the Medical Association has raised its voice by stating that the real public opinion confirmed through the elections must be respected.

The public realized that the policy of increasing the number of medical schools was a popular general election policy and condemned the ruling party to a crushing defeat.

“We demand that all orders, complaints and unreasonable administrative provisions be withdrawn and that the process of increasing the number of medical school students be stopped.”

There is also a cautious view within the medical community that we should wait and see the government’s attitude.

″″The President would not talk about various pending issues… Let’s see what the government’s opinion is and how we will respond in the future…″

Meanwhile, 1,325 Sajik students said they had been harmed by the government’s policy of mandating medical school quota expansions and announced they would sue Park Min-soo, second vice minister of health and welfare, with the accusation of abuse of power on the 15th.
